Hello to all second grade parents. I am looking forward to working as a team with you this year as your child begins their "journey to learn" in my classroom. Please stay tuned to this page for further updates on information by clicking on Current Info. This portion of the Parent Page will change at times during the school year.
Grading and Assessments
Daily work, tests,
participation, projects and other types of assessments will all
be used to determine your child's grades. The grading
system can be found on page 6 of the elementary handbook.
Grades are given in letter grades (A,B,C,D,F) for reading,
spelling, English, and math. Handwriting, science, and
social studies are given as S, S-, and U in second grade.
Classroom work, especially in the areas of
social studies and science will become more independent as the
year progresses. Problem of the Day is
an additional math activity that allows students to earn points
by independently working on a problem presented on that chart
each day. These provide a variety of problem solving
challenges and when they reach 10 points they can choose a prize.
Any questions about grades or a specific paper
are welcome. Everyone makes mistakes! I appreciate
your interest in your child's work.
ATTENDANCE
Details about attendance and absences can be
found in the elementary handbook. Absences are recorded by
half days. Students are tardy if they are not in the
classroom at 8:10 a.m. with exception to late buses or bad
weather and dismisses at 3:12.
If possible please let the
classroom teacher know ahead of time for planned absences.
This is helpful in planning classroom activities that your child
might miss if they can be rearranged. It also gives the
teacher an opportunity to prepare any work that needs to be done
ahead or go home with the student. Arrangements to do
other missed work can be finished during recess or go home if
necessary.
Well its almost Christmas and we're excited!!! Also, we're looking forward to moving into the new school. It sounds like we're hoping to be in late January. I took some pictures of our classroom to show the students. We wrote Christmas/Winter stories and poems to read to other classes. Our class chose to spend the money we would have used for a gift exchange for TOYS FOR TOTS. We chose two games for our gifts from the class. We've been "tick-ticking" with clocks in math. I hope you parents can ask your child to tell you the time every so often at home. That will help us here. Our Native American unit was completed this week. We learned about several different regions and how they lived. Please keep reading with your child over break and have a Merry Christmas!
